Dorothy, when I was in Germany, I was taken for an Albanian (!), Italian, Spanish, though I do look like a typical Armenian, I suppose.
Even here in Yerevan some people assured me I looked like a French or Italian.

Ok, let me start.. a typical Armenian has ..
1) dark brown eyes with mandatory incomprehensible sad look in them
2) dark brown/black hair color, among females often times dyed blonde
3) ..

Dorothy, Gayka help me here

Are we to describe the appearance only or touch upon the character as well?

Hey girls! Are you ashamed of having a typical Armenian look??

I can't understand that! You know, that is again so much characteristic for an Armenian (particularly woman) to say ''they say I look like Italian, Spanish, whatever!..'' Do you think that is a compliment???? Huh!

Not at all! In other countries they take you for an Italian/Greek/etc. cause they have little idea about Armenia.. and, Psi, you are right South-East Europeans look somehow alike..

I should say, that Italian women are never as pretty as Armenian ones...In general, they have long red-like faces, thin lips, bad skin, and their shape is far from being ideal...) of course you can find beautiful ones in any country.
Have you ever seen a common (typical/everyday) French woman???
I guess, not really

.. and it's not even worth mentioning that Armenian eyes cannot be compared with any others...

I myself got such ''compliments'' numerous times, but I would answer: do you really think I look that bad!

There was once a Greek woman visiting me in Yerevan, and she was amazed by our girls...
Do you know that in Japan Armenian women are declared among the most beautifuls in the world???

my dearest friends, you all are so pretty and so much look like typical Armenians! and I am proud of that

Coming back to the comparison of Italians and Armenians, I would say, yes, that's true! There are a looooot of common things and not only 'global' ones, such as old cultures and southeuropean belonging..

the character, way of thinking and acting.. many little everyday things,.. loud speaking, being hot-emotional, the 'macho-things', hospitality, boasting and many other, also rather negative, features..-)

The Italians are so much like us , that one could hardly believe ..

Butterfly, nothing of the kind!!
Just the fact of being taken for an Italian/Spanish/whatever was surprising.

As to French women, though I've seen not so many of them, I hardly met a pretty face/body in about a week. French guys are much more handsome, I must admit.

Gay, saying ''compliment'', I've meant those got from our compatriots...

Outside Armenia, yeah, right, usually peope think of us as Italians/Spanish/Latino.. I think, mostly cause we are not blond and not china-like... when abroad, it's almost impossible that you meet a person who would take you for an Armenian, unless he is Armenian himself.

Here is a funny flash movie, showing the whole similarity of Armenians and Italians.
http://freenet.am/~aramx/italy.exe
Don't be afraid, it's not a virus, it's just a flash movie.
Enjoy!

Not at all! In other countries they take you for an Italian/Greek/etc. cause they have little idea about Armenia..

By the way in Greece I never had problems in explaning who I am and where Armenia is ... Normally they knew it perfectly well and they even used to say that they liked Armenians because of the similar history we share (they meant Turks, I guess ). Once a Greek man even said "If I didn't know you were Armenian, I'd say that you're Greek". Actually I didn't like this remark, 'cause I think on the whole Greek girls don't look very attractive Guys are much better (Gay )
But when it came to people from such countries as, for isntance, USA or, say New Zealand - yep! No idea what Armenia is! And where it is! Absolutely!

Gay, I met an Albanian girl in Greece. You know what she looked like? A typical Brusov student She was the only person who brought an iron with her! I was so much suprized to see her change her clothes every hour... I though it was a purely Armenian habit
Have a look - she's the one with a plastic cup in her hands The girl standing next to me was from Argentina

Yeah, I believe so

In Europe, educated people, as a rule, know quite a bit about Armenia, Profs and Docs, perhaps, know more..) but younger generation, students, etc. almost have no idea. Sometimes they recognise it in connection to former USSR(especially in East Germany)..., sometimes they ask me to explain where it is, sometimes they are confused and silent (maybe later they look in encyclopaedia-)), once an English girl(from London) told me frankly: ''I am sorry but I don't know where it is'' and was not interested to know.

Recently, I have been asked: ''Jokes of Radio Erevan- that is Armenia, isn't that?'' ) To tell you truly, here in Germany they are very popular )
