Moscow and Yerevan to explore uranium deposits in Armenia
January 29, 2007 21:27:21

YEREVAN (AFX) - Moscow and Yerevan want to explore uranium deposits
in Armenia which could supply the Armenian nuclear power station in
Metsamor, the Armenian presidency announced.

'Uranium deposits were first prospected in Armenia in the Soviet era.
There are documents which confirm their existence in the Rosatom (the
Russian federal agency for atomic energy) archives', spokesman to the
Armenian president Viktor Sogomonian told the press.

Specialists from a Russian-Armenian commission (to be created for
this project) will evaluate the reserves of these deposits and
determine whether they would be worth mining, the spokesman said.

'The uranium will not be enriched and will be produced exclusively
for the Armenian nuclear industry', Sogomonian said.

Armenia's only nuclear power station is in Metsamor, 30km west of
Yerevan. It produces 40 pct of the country's electricity. Since 2005,
it has been managed by Inter SEU, a subsidiary of the Russian
electricity giant SEU.

According to the Armenian energy minister, 70 pct of electricity
produced in Armenia depends on deliveries of Russian gas and nuclear
fuel.

Russia to help Armenia mine for uranium
January 29, 2007 21:30:31
Agence France Presse -- English
YEREVAN, Jan 29 2007 -- Russia is to help Armenia look for uranium to supply a Russian-run nuclear power station near the capital Yerevan, Armenian officials
said on Monday.

"Uranium deposits were looked for in the Soviet era. There are
documents confirming their existence in Rosatom," Russia's atomic
agency authority, presidential spokesman Viktor Sogomonian told
reporters.

"The uranium will not be enriched and will be produced exclusively
for the needs of the Armenian atomic industry," he added.

Armenia's only nuclear power station, Metsamor, is operated by an
affiliate of state-owned Russian power group SEU and supplies around
40 percent of Armenia's electricity needs.
Russia, Armenia to set up joint group to explore uranium fields
January 29, 2007 21:32:00

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
ITAR-TASS News Agency

Russia and Armenia have decided to cerate a joint commission to
explore uranium fields in Armenia.

Uranium fields were discovered in Armenia in Soviet times. The
commission will have to examine them and find out whether mining will
be economically justified, presidential spokesman Viktor Sogomonyan
said on Monday.

``I can say quite certainly that no uranium enrichment will be
carried out in Armenia,'' he said.
Armenia won't enrich uranium
January 29, 2007 21:43:49
------------------------------------------------------------------
/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Armenian and Russian Presidents
referred to the issue of the Armenian Nuclear Power
Plant during their meeting in Sochi, RA leader's
Spokesman Victor Soghomonian told reporters in
Yerevan. Expedience of opening up uranium mines in
Armenia was also discussed, he said. `As you know,
Armenia possesses uranium resources and the expediency
of its extraction should be decided by specialists.
However, Armenia won't enrich uranium,' Soghomonian
underscored.

It's worth mentioning that during the soviet period
uranium mines were run in Kapan but they were closed
over commercial impracticability and disutility.

К сведению.
