Ulfilas [ŭl'filus]

Ulfilas or Wulfila [wool'filu] [Gothic,=little wolf], c.311–383, Gothic bishop, translator of the Bible into Gothic. He was converted to Christianity at Constantinople and was consecrated bishop (341) by the Arian bishop Eusebius of Nicomedia. Ulfilas then returned to the Visigoths as a missionary; it was partly as a result of Ulfilas's work that the Goths became and remained Arians for so long in the face of triumphant Catholicism. Of Ulfilas's Bible only fragments remain—parts of Genesis, Nehemiah, most of the Gospels, and the whole of Second Corinthians, with several more fragments. Ulfilas is said to have invented the alphabet that he used.

Without Wulfila we would have know practically nothing about the Gothic language. The Bible he translated into this East Germanic tongue is a unique document which allows us to learn extremely important things about Germanic, and Gothic in particular. The script the book was written in was a modification of the Greek alphabet with several newly introduced letters.

Без него мы бы ничего не узнали бы о готском. Кстати в этой Библии этот Вуллфилла добавил много армянских слов и терминов которые он не знал на готском. Готы это не заметили между прочим потому что в основном читать не умели

Более того именно он придумал Готский алфавит которым сегодня так гордятся немцы.. Вернее не алфавит а именно его графику.
Так что по части создания алфавитов армяне наверное не имеют себе равных

The earliest items written in any Germanic language are the fragments we have of the Bible translated by Ulfilas in the fourth century. Ulfilas' grandparents had been Christians in Cappadocia (in modern Turkey) when the Germanic Goths raided the region and carried them off as captives. Many of those captured by the Goths were Christians, and it was through their witness that Christianity first spread among the Germanic tribes. Ulfilas (whose name means "little wolf") received a good education in Constantinople, where he possibly was a hostage.

Heathen
This word for non-Christian or pagan is common in all the Germanic languages. It appears in Old English as hâþen in the year 826. It clearly arose after Christianity, but had to be quite early for it to appear in all the Germanic tongues, sometime in the 4th century or earlier. Most words of this age have unclear etymologies, but this is not the case with heathen.

It is believed to have originated in Gothic and spread to the other Germanic tribes. In the 4th century, Ulfilas, bishop of the Goths, translated the Bible into Gothic. In Mark 7:26, which reads "Now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth...," Ulfilas used the word haiþnô in place of Greek, or as it appears in the Vulgate gentilis, or gentile. Haiþnô literally means dweller on the heath. So the original sense is remarkably the same as the modern sense, someone living beyond the bounds of civilization and who has not received the word of God.

So, heathen has a remarkably similar semantic history as pagan.

This hypothesis is not universally accepted however. Some point out that Ulfilas may have been influenced by Armenian and that heathen instead is related to the Armenian het'anos, which is derived from the Greek ethnos, meaning nation or people.
