Martin Scorsese's Blues

Martin Scorsese's seven-segment series "The Blues" aired on PBS in late September and early October. The series was several years in the making and its form and participants changed over time. It was originally supposed to be six segments with Spike Lee directing the first, which was to be about the origin of the blues. Lee dropped out, I heard over a disagreement about another movie deal, and Scorsese did the first segment himself, though stories are now circulating that he wasn't actually there when most of the film's footage was shot. In the original plan, the Mike Figgis was supposed to have ended the series with a segment on the influence of blues on world music. Instead, he looked just at the influence of blues on a small number of British musicians and the series ended with a segment on piano blues by Clint Eastwood.

These are seven-parts that were aired:
Feel Like Going Home by Martin Scorsese
The Soul of a Man by Wim Wenders
The Road to Memphis by Richard Pearce
Warming by the Devil's Fire by Charles Burnett
Godfathers and Sons by Marc Levin
Red, White & Blues by Mike Figgis
Piano Blues by Clint Eastwood

"The Blues" was hugely marketed, with multiple full-page ads in The New Yorker, New York Times Magazine and similar places, and a barrage of promos on PBS. It is available as a 7-disc DVD set, a 5-disc CD set with just the music, and a book.

Reviews were varied and mixed and quirky. I did a Lexis search for reviews on the series a week or so after it aired and found love and hate reviews for every one of the seven films. Here are the three reviews posted on Buffalo Report:

B.J.

William L. Benzon: Scorsese's Blues. Five of the seven segments of Martin Scorsese's Blues series for PBS have now aired. Two are lousy; two have problems but are interesting anyway. One is terrific. Writer and jazz horn player Bill Benzon takes on the first three episodes. (3 October 2003)

William Benzon: The Door is Open: Scorsese's Blues 2. Benzon continues his examination of Martin Scorsese's seven-part PBS series, "The Blues," with comments on the films by Mike Figgis and Clint Eastwood, plus a very smart comparison between what Martin Scorsese accomplished and what Ken Burns did not accomplish with all that public money and time. (8 October 2003)

Bruce Jackson: Charles Burnett's "Warming by the Devil's Fire." There were three historical films in Martin Scorsese's seven-segment PBS series on the Blues: one by Scorsese, one by Wim Wenders, and one by Charles Burnett. Only one is worth a damn. (10 October 2003)
