The Appropriations SubCommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives approved the levels of spending for Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh proposed in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2006 Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill.

The bill calls for $67.5 million for Armenia, up to $5 million for the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, and $5.75 million each in military assistance to both Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Although total U.S. financial aid to the countries of the former Soviet Union continues to decline steadily, the aid earmarked for Armenia is $12.5 million more than for FY 2005.

The bill will be considered by the full House Appropriations Committee in July.

The Armenian Assembly of America, which in April submitted testimony before the House Foreign Operations Appropriations SubCommittee stressing the need for continued funding to both Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, released a statement on 17 June praising the SubCommittee for its endorsement of the proposed aid level.
