Armenian Snake Folklore

Hello, everyone:

My name is Edith Nazarian. I’m currently working on a research project on Armenian folklore at the University of California, Irvine and was just wondering if anyone here might be able to help me.

Basically, I’m interested in collecting any stories/superstitions about snakes that either you have heard of or know through experience. So, for example, my uncle’s wife has a relative in Armenia who says she was visited and warned by a snake in a dream. Another story that I have heard is about a snake living under the stairs of a house, collecting gold.

If you do happen to share a story, please leave as much information about yourself as you can, such as your name, age, gender, and what kind of Armenian you are (e.g., Armenian-Armenian, Iranian-Armenian, American-Armenian, etc.). If you don’t feel comfortable sharing your story or personal information here, you can always send me a private message or email me at [email protected]. The information that I collect will only be used for this project and will be kept confidential.

Thank you very much for all your time and help. Your contributions are greatly appreciated. Shat, shat merci :)

Edith

Hello Edith,

I don't know how relevant this may be for your research, but when a child, I have heard many times elderly relatives to say that one shouldn't kill a snake as the killer's image is portrayed in snake's eyes.
And that snakes live in clans and other revengeful members of the clan could find and kill you by either biting or smothering, therefore if after all you decide to kill a snake you should smash its head:)

P.S. I'll send you a PM with my personal info.

There's a saying "Even a snake doesn't bite a man, when he's drinking water" that goes to people disturbing someone's act of drinking water.

Saying - one has snake's tongue, will convince everything :)
