More than 3,000 US and Iraqi troops have launched a major offensive on a rebel stronghold south of the capital, Baghdad, the US Central Command says.

Its press release said more than 30 suspected insurgents were seized in the sweep in the Babil province.

It said the forces seized a suspected rebel training camp and secured a key bridge across the Euphrates River often used by insurgents.

No casualties have so far been reported among the assault force.

The operation in the Babil region - which centres on the town of Hilla - follows a US-led blitz at the weekend on another rebel stronghold, Samarra, to the north of Baghdad.

Dozens of people, including a number of civilians, were killed in the two-day operation.

Experts say the US-led Multinational Forces and Iraq's interim government may be tempted to build on the successful Samarra operation to secure other areas where rebels have been active, in time for scheduled elections in January.

'Fostering security'

"Iraqi and multinational forces today kicked off their most sweeping operation to date in northern Babil, moving against multiple targets across the central Iraqi province in a continuing campaign to restore security and stability here," the press release said.

It said the offensive's main mission was "to assist Iraqi authorities in fostering security and stability for the nearly 900,000 citizens of the province".

The US Central Command said the Jurf Kas Sukr Bridge was believed to be a favoured corridor for insurgents moving into and out of key cities, including Baghdad and the rebel stronghold of Falluja.

The operation was led by the US 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, the press release said.

It said that more than 160 suspected rebels have been captured in co-ordinated US-Iraqi operations in the Babil province since July.

Сводки Иракского Сопротивления информируют читателей о борьбе с оккупантами в Ираке уже свыше года. За это время, Сопротивление в Ираке окрепло и существенно усилилось, оно распространилось уже практически на каждый уголок страны. Отряды Сопротивления уничтожили или захватили, в ходе своей борьбы, все виды вооружений используемых оккупантами и их марионетками в Ираке.

Освещение средствами массовой информации борьбы против оккупантов, однако, очень неполное и плохое. Это происходит, в основном, благодаря тому давлению, которое оказывают на средства массовой информации США. Когда, сразу после агрессии США против Ирака, только-только стали появляться сводки Сопротивления, арабские средства массовой информации все еще были относительно надежными источниками информации о борьбе с оккупантами.

В то время как хоть какая то информация о гуманитарных катастрофах, вызванных агрессией и оккупацией в Ираке все таки изредка появляется, информация о борьбе Сопротивления с американскими оккупантами практически исчезла из западных и арабских СМИ.

Но «правду скрыть невозможно», и, все большее и большее число простых и бесстрашных граждан Ирака участвует в составлении Сводок Сопротивления во все уголках Ирака, сообщая и арабским читателям важную и бесценную информацию о ежедневных боях отрядов Сопротивления с оккупантами. В Сводках Сопротивления широко используется информация, предоставляемая агентством Мафкарат аль-Ислам. Это агентство является уникальным, т.к., несмотря на давление Американской империи в Ираке, оно продолжает свою работу по освещению борьбы с оккупантами.

Корреспонденты Мафкарат аль-Ислам заплатили высокую цену за то, чтобы все знали правду о том, что происходит в Ираке. По меньшей мере, девять корреспондентов этого агентства были убиты американскими оккупантами с того времени, как США развязали войну против Ирака.

Если раньше мы старались быть максимально понятными всем читателям, при подаче информации, то теперь мы надеемся, поменяв акцент наших Сводок, добиться следующих целей:

1. Противостоять лжи о иракском Сопротивлении, распространяемой империалистическими СМИ;

2. Уделять внимание тенденциям и подавать информацию о том, что представляется наиболее существенным в ежедневной борьбе Сопротивления.

The US fortress inside Baghdad, where the American embassy sits behind razorwire and concrete blast barricades and where the "Interim government" of Iraq installed by the US is stored, is being penetrated more and more frequently by the Iraqi resistance. In a report today from the AP:

The warning to Americans and Iraqi officials in the Green Zone followed the discovery Tuesday of an explosive device at the Green Zone Cafe, a popular hangout for Westerners living and working in the compound which houses major U.S. and Iraqi government offices. A U.S. military ordnance detachment safely disarmed it, U.S. officials said.

A loud explosion shook the Green Zone on Thursday afternoon and smoke was seen rising from inside the compound. The U.S. military had no immediate information on the incident. Insurgents regularly fire at the compound.

Americans living and working in the zone were warned to avoid non-essential movements, travel in groups and avoid specific areas.

A Financial Times article from September 15 cites American military commanders:

US military officers in Baghdad have warned they cannot guarantee the security of the perimeter around the Green Zone, the headquarters of the Iraqi government and home to the US and British embassies, according to security company employees.

At a briefing earlier this month, a high-ranking US officer in charge of the zone's perimeter said he had insufficient soldiers to prevent intruders penetrating the compound's defences.

The US major said it was possible weapons or explosives had already been stashed in the zone, and warned people to move in pairs for their own safety. The Green Zone, in Baghdad's centre, is one of the most fortified US installations in Iraq. Until now, militants have not been able to penetrate it.

And so it goes. Less than a month ago, the 1,000 American deaths milestone was passed and as of 10/6/04 the toll stood at 1065 dead Americans. According to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count website, there have been exactly FOUR days in the year 2004 which have passed without at least one American military death and the last such day was in June.

There is now no area in Iraq in which it is possible for an American to travel freely.

So much for the imposition of "democracy" at the point of a gun. The only question remaining about the American occupation of Iraq involves the details of how it badly and quickly it ends.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two U.S. military transport helicopters crashed near Baghdad on Saturday, killing two U.S. soldiers and wounding two others, the U.S. military said.

"The incident occurred at around 8.25 p.m. (1325 GMT) in southwestern Baghdad," U.S. military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Will Hutton said. "The incident is under investigation." He did not say what type of helicopter was involved.

U.S. helicopters regularly come under attack from insurgents firing rifles and other weapons in and around Baghdad, and it was not immediately clear if Saturday's incident was an accident or the result of an attack.

It has been several months since a U.S. helicopter was shot down in Iraq (news - web sites), though there was a spate of incidents late last year in which several Black Hawk choppers and at least two twin-rotor Chinooks were brought down by guerrilla attacks.

3rd Helicopter Donwed

A 3rd helicopter has been downed in the area of Radhwaniya south of Baghdad. The helicopter downed was an Apache whhich was struck by a "Strella" rocket fired by the Iraqi Resistance Fighters.

The Stella rockets are responsible for yesterdays downing of two helicopters.
