Dear colleagues,
I am really sorry that EBU is being bombarded with e-mails from Azerbaijan regarding the so-called plagiarism. Well, when I have informed you that this never-ending soap-opera will continue with bigger and bigger force, it seems that you didn't believe me. When I told that the main weapon of Azerbaijan is accusations against everything we do (singing, dancing, cuisine, literature and etc.), because they strongly believe that world steals their culture.
It is too bad that now I am compelled to settle this Armenia vs. Azerbaijan conflict you are witnessing. This is of course not the first mail and complaint-bombarding of EBU by Azeri officials, non-officials, journalists and simple people and let me remind you year by year what has happened.
Year 2006; Armenia takes part in ESC for the very first time. All of you remember the hijacked web-site of Andre, our first representative in ESC 2006 in Athens. Azeri people were spreading threats not only through our company's e-mails, but your, Andre's and everyone who let Armenia participate in ESC. They were furious about Andre's birthplace (Stepanakert). We are neighbors and know each other perfectly and that's why we asked everyone in Europe to be as tolerant towards all those accusations as we are. We follow our main axiom "let politicians settle the political conflicts".
Year 2007; Armenia takes part in ESC for the second time. And Azeri people are furious about the musical instrument "duduk" used in the track of Hayko's song. All forums, blogs, e-mails were nothing but a battle about the origin of duduk.
Year 2008; Armenia takes part in ESC for the third time. Azeri people search google, yahoo or whatever they have and find our singer Sirusho performing "Shorora", written in the period of 1915-1935 by Sheram (real name Grigor Talyan, born in 1857). Sheram was born in Alexandropolis (second largest city in Armenia, now Gyumri) and made the printed music out of Komitas melodies (
ФіХ¬Х*ХЎХѕХёЦЂ Ф·Х» — ХЋХ«Ц„Х«ЦѓХҐХ¤Х«ХЎՇերամ). He wrote his own songs in the age of 12-13, sang in the well-known Armenian trio conducted by Chungur Hago, had concert tours in Yerevan, Tbilisi, Baku, Astrakhan, Shushi, Kars and other cities. After that he has created his own ensemble and came to Ejmiatsin (Armenian Vatican). Then he finally moved to Yerevan in 1935 and started a new era in Armenian music industry of early 1900-es. He simplified the poetry and lyrics of the songs, made them close to wider range of listeners and expressed the feelings and concerns of a small, simple and poor man. He made a sort of revolution in the Armenian music industry. In medieval Armenia there was a rule to write the songs in special songbooks, release them and sell to public. That rule has been followed in 1902, 1905, 1915, when the songbooks of Sheram were released with that "Shorora" song in one of them. This has happened in the very beginning of last century! Someone considers us very stupid and it is really very offensive, because we read the rules carefully, we have small but strong experience in ESC participating and we know the October 1st rule.
This is another attempt to accuse us in something that I don't understand. Let me underline that Sirusho has performed that very old and beautiful Armenian song in 2005, but it was written century ago! 4 songs that we have chosen have nothing to do with the style of Sheram's music and they are written by 4 young Armenian composers. Nobody except me, composers, Sirusho or people related to ESC preparations in Armenia has ever listened to those 4 songs. Moreover we keep the confidentiality until everything is ready. Let me reassure you once again that Azeri people are speaking about completely different thing, because they believe we are going to ESC with 100-year-old song. Those historical, ethnical, cultural, ethnographical, geographical, national and all other kinds of conflicts are very typical and not new.
But we are not going into political stage and we follow the axiom. Song contest is only a song contest!
We are there in ESC for singing, sharing experience, positive emotions and learning from European colleagues how to make a fantastic show with the efforts of 43 members.
