Armenia rejects U.S. Missile Plan

Amidst rumors of U.S. interest to deploy a missile defense system in Armenia, Armenian deputy foreign minister Arman Kirakosyan has announced that he will not welcome the plan in his country.
"I would like to make an official statement that we have not received any inquiries or proposals on that score from the U.S. or NATO commanders," Kirakosyan said.
However, on 1st March, a senior Pentagon official announced interest in approaching ex-Soviet republics like Georgia and Azerbaijan on U.S.'s missile plan, with Armenia now added to the list.
Both Georgia and Azerbaijan have stated they are not aware of any such plans nor have they been approached by the United States.
Russia is vehemently against any deployment of a U.S. missile defense system, especially in any ex-Soviet states, stating that it will jeopardize national security in the region.
Washington claims the system will counter any possible missile threat from countries such as North Korea and Iran while Russian army officials who do not believe them, advise the United States to look at the maps to see how far Iran and Korea are to Europe.

Source. This documentary by two Czechs, Martin Maraˇcek and Martin Skalsk´y, is set in Azerbaijan. It tells a sadly familiar story in a new setting, a dilemma that keeps growing while the world says "Tsk tsk" and does little. Azerbaijan is one more place where old ways of life are being shriveled by industrial activities.
The very first shot is of a cow grazing in a small patch of grass surrounded by oil wells, giant machinery, and busy desolation. That shot crystallizes the film's subject--we see it again at the end--and the protests and complaints that we see along the way are bitter. British and American oil interests have moved into the local oil fields with little regard for the wishes or the welfare of the locals, most of whom were once farmers. All the problems that resulted from the invasion for oil, social and occupational, are buried (the companies hope) under the pipeline that gushes into Europe.
Matters are complicated by the notoriously corrupt Azerbaijan government, so that the displaced locals get little benefit from the fortunes that are being made. Some of the men have jobs in the oil fields, of course, but their treatment doesn't fit the fortunes being made. Clips from Soviet films about happy oil-soaked workers in those days contrast with the present--propaganda versus fact.
Few would wish that the oil production stop and the land be returned to farming. But, as usual, few have thought about the boring, bothersome human elements.

YEREVAN, Armenia, March 12 Gas tariffs in Armenia may rise by $16 per 1,000 cubic meters ifYerevan invests in the second section of the Iran-Armenia gas pipeline, an expert said.
The comments by Robert Nazaryan, chairman of Armenia's public services regulatory commission, came Monday as he was endorsing the Hayrusgazard investment program for 2007-09, which is worth $193 million. The comments were reported by the Arminfo news agency.
He said the costs might be less if Armenia's supply of 3 kW of electricity for 1 cu.m. of gas from Iran was taken into account.
He noted, however, that the investment was needed to ensure Armenia's energy security. Hayrusgazard plans to invest $93 million to increase the capacity of the pipeline's section running from Kajaran to Ararat, Arminfo reported.
Work on the 120-mile pipeline began last year.

Вы наверное никогда не писали бизнес планов.
1. 7 лет, в главе Risks продлевает плато стабильности повышая надежность бизнеса в регионе.
2. Наличие Американской радио- локационной базы в Армении (а) снижает вероятность начала войны в регионе, (б) Русские не будут психовать из-за присутствия Американцев на Кавказе, так как впервые Американцы продекларируют, что они не против Русских, так как построили базу на территории Русского Протектората, (в) Иран никогда не ударит по этой базе, так как территория охраняется Россией.
3. Интересные мысли насчет газа повышают стабильность в регионе и коммерческую привлекательность самого бизнес предложения, а наличие самого большого посольства США в мире в Армении (после иракской базы-посольства), да еще под охраной Российской Армии делает кавказский бизнес план наиболее стабильным, а поставки газа (голубой поток + среднеазиатский газ через Азербайджан), воды и нефти (через Грузию) по дну средиземного моря из Турции в Израиль, и через Грузию/Турцию в Европу гарантированно стабильными.
