Lightbulb Salary Survey for Writers

Quote:
Salary Range

The overall average U.S. salary is $70,632, about $2,700 more than last year. The salaries range from $27,000 to $185,000 and fall into the following quartile groupings:

GroupSalary/Salary(in $1000s)
------------------------
Lower quartile - 27-54
Second quartile - 55-68
Third quartile - 69-82
Top quartile - 83-185

Benefits

While the bulk of this survey report focuses on salary, employee benefits can add up to a significant value. These often include medical and dental insurance, tuition reimbursements, professional society dues, and 401(k) plans. Since benefit packages vary widely and are valued differently, we asked the respondents not to include benefits in their salary figure.

We asked respondents how they rank the importance of stock options. This year 46% of you indicated receiving no stock options. Of those who receive stock options, only 8.7% rate them as Very Important. The uncertainties in the market has put a damper on enthusiasm for this once very popular benefit.

So i guess i should really start thinking seriously about launching a career of a writer? Seventy grand is not bad at all- i have three books slowly cooking in the oven, should hurry up and get it published!
Thanks for the info...

Technical writer, information developer, technical communicator, documentation specialist, technical publications developer .... it's an absolute titling potpourri but alas naming conventions in Armenia are purely a company's prerogative yet ... the range is between $100-500 for Win writers and $400 to 1200 for Unix writers with essential knowledge: expertise, domain, project experience and tools. Do you want to enter this field? I recommend drafting your resume cautiously so that you can be sure that you've set the right expectations ...

Count yourself lucky although, most of technical writers today come to know about technical writing through their jobs, but it's always an advantage for the doc developer to have coding and logical reasoning skills; thus to keep away from writing in any bizarre, random order and style ... journalists and linguists do it all the time - it's called "research" ...
