Israel diverts Lufthansa jet to Cyprus

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Israel has turned away a Lufthansa passenger plane bound for Tel Aviv due to a bomb threat.

The plane landed safely in Cyprus on Tuesday after it was escorted by Israeli air force fighters.

Lufthansa said it had not judged the threat to be serious but that Israel had insisted on diverting the plane which was carrying 347 passengers and crew.

It is the sixth time in just over a week that a plane has been diverted in Europe due to a security scare.

Passengers were taken off Flight 686 from Frankfurt, a Boeing 747-400, when it landed in Larnaca shortly after 1500 (1 p.m.).

Police with sniffer dogs were searching the plane.

"...after checking with the German authorities we came to the conclusion this bomb threat was not so serious," said Lufthansa spokesman Thomas Jachnow.

"We accept the decision of the Israeli government ... but we are sure this bomb warning wasn't serious."

Jachnow, speaking by phone from Frankfurt, said there were 331 passengers and 16 crew on board.

The dollar fell slightly against the Swiss franc in reaction to the news. The Swiss franc is typically seen as a safe haven currency in times of geopolitical security worries.

German police said an anonymous threat against the flight had been made to city authorities in Frankfurt and Berlin but that following consultation with the Interior Ministry, it had not been considered serious.

Israeli media reported that Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz had ordered that the plane should not be allowed to enter Israeli airspace until security checks had been completed. The Defence Ministry was not immediately available for comment.

On Monday, a Singapore Airlines plane, was diverted to Britain's Manchester airport after a bomb threat on a flight to New York.

A Greek Olympic Airlines flight from Athens to London was also forced to land on the island of Corfu shortly after takeoff because of a bomb threat.

Last Thursday, a British Airways flight from Berlin to London was diverted to Amsterdam.

Two other Olympic Airlines planes flying from Athens to New York were diverted to Britain and Ireland at the end of last month.

Olympic Airlines Managing Director Odysseas Vlamis said the cost of diversions was about 100,000 euros (68,000 pounds).
