SAYAT NOVA DANCE COMPANY OF BOSTON
SCHEDULES BEGINNERS’ CLASSES FOR NEW MEMBERS

As the Sayat Nova Dance Company of Boston (SNDC) gears up for yet another busy year of rehearsals, activities, fun-filled socials, and much-anticipated performances, the preparation for the upcoming events has begun with great enthusiasm. One of the foremost objectives of SNDC is to attract the Armenian youth into a family-like, energetic environment of dance and camaraderie. Made up of over 80 dedicated members, the Company always welcomes more individuals interested in being a part of the SNDC family. Although during a show, an audience may feel the excitement and energy portrayed on stage, “being an actual member of the Dance Company allows one to fully absorb the spirit and pride of their Armenian culture through the art of dance,” explains director Apo Ashjian. Interested individuals should not feel intimidated or hesitate to join the Company, because no dance experience is necessary. “Taking the initiative to say ‘Here I am, I want to join, I want to learn how to dance’ is all that we expect. If the passion of expressing their culture through dance is in them, then it gives us plenty to work with,” says Ashjian.

Since over 60% of dancers are women at this time, there’s plenty of room for male dancers to join in and experience the joy of contributing to the Armenian cultural life of our community. The atmosphere is comfortable and the dress code casual for the Beginners’ classes. Those interested in joining these sessions, may attend dressed in sweats and sneakers.

Dance classes for Beginners start on Sunday, May 15th, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., at the Abaka Armenian School for the Performing Arts, at 101 Bigelow Ave., Watertown, MA. Classes are held every Sunday and are designed to teach inexperienced dancers the basic and fundamental steps of Armenian Dance, along with correct posture and stance. Once they master these basic steps, they will be ready to join in the regular group rehearsals of Sayat Nova, held on Sundays, from 7-9:30 p.m., at the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center in Watertown (next door to Abaka). Interested individuals must be over the age of 16 or a junior in high school. No previous dance experience is required. All that’s needed is their passion and commitment. What better way to spend Sundays than with a group of young Armenians, proud to be preserving and promoting the Armenian culture through the art of dance?
