It is the day the Great War ended. At 11 am on this, the
11th day of the 11th month, all of Europe is supposed to
stop in its tracks - and then the bells toll. They toll for
as many as 20 million people who died in the War... and
millions more who were wounded or mutilated.

The Armistice was agreed at 5am on November 11th, to come into effect at 11am, Paris time. It was the result of a hurried and desperate process.

Acting German commander Paul von Hindenburg had requested arrangements for a meeting from Ferdinand Foch via telegram on the 7th. He was under pressure of imminent revolution in Berlin, Munich and elsewhere across Germany.

German parties seal 'grand coalition' deal

BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) -- Germany's main parties sealed an agreement on Friday to create a government of traditional rivals under the leadership of conservative Angela Merkel, breaking eight weeks of deadlock after an inconclusive general election.

"I'm convinced that the coalition creates a genuine opportunity for Germany," said Merkel, who will become the country's first woman chancellor and first from the former communist East if, as expected, the new parliament formally elects her on November 22.
