... Ways to Kick Oil Habit

Feb. 2, 2006 — While America may be addicted to foreign oil, as President George W. Bush has said, there may be some surprisingly simple ways to kick the habit, say engineers.
For instance, why not simply create a federal standard that requires U.S. automakers to build all cars and trucks so they can run on either pure gasoline or a cleaner burning gas/ethanol mix of up to 85 percent ethanol (a.k.a. E85)?
It's cheaper to do than making hybrid cars, the technology is already proven, America grows lots of corn for ethanol, and most auto makers have already been building "flex-fuel" models for years, according to Robert Zubrin, president of the aerospace firm Pioneer Astronautics and author of The Case for Mars.
"The thing that makes this a winner is 1) there is a negligible cost difference to making flex fuel vehicle, 2) such cars can use existing gasoline," Zubrin said.
That means consumers will be able to choose the fuel based on the price. If ethanol is cheaper, flex-fuel cars will create a demand for it and more filling stations will begin to sell it.
Zubrin has outlined his straightforward plan to energy independence in an article in the March issue of American Enterprise magazine.
While Zubrin's plan would certainly succeed in ramping up the demand for ethanol, and thereby cause more ethanol pumps to appear at gas stations, the ethanol supply is far from meeting such that kind of demand, said Don MacKenzie, a vehicle engineer for the Union of Concerned Scientists.

подбросил бы наш посол американцам эту идею - глядишь и пошел бы эспорт ослиного раствора из Карабаха
потом бы сами соседи просили бы ослиную трубу через них проводить

Ну что тут сказать. Если через 500 лет один армянский любитель историк напишет трактат о том что Ереван был одним из первых городов мира где транспорт работал на газе то его высмеят и заклеймут как шовиниста националиста с комплексом неполноценности.

А для США перейти на газ не так то легко как кажется. Проблема не в технике а в мозгах. Вся Американская инфраструктура транспорта построена на бензоколонках. Кто там позволит начать газовые станции строить. Даже если построят то это не так то легко всю Америку перевести на газ. Это вам не маленький Ереван где один Доди Гаго может весь город наполнить газовыми станциями.

А что скажут торговцы бензином. Такие монстры как Тексако, Шелл итд итп.

И еще газ не так то дешев в США. Там его приводят в жижженном виде из Южной Америки и других мест.

Так что идея конечно очень похвальная но вряд ли в ближайшее время она станет реальностью.

И еще в США один из самых дешевых бензинов в мире. Литр бензина стоит насколько я знаю максимум 70- 80 центов.
Так что стимула тоже нету особого
