Default Journalists' Training in London

British Council Armenia is pleased to announce a competition for a study tour for journalists to London, UK, organised within the project “Raising Role of Media in Monitoring Government Programmes”. The project is funded by the British Government and the UNDP office in Armenia. It is aimed at improving the capacity and increasing professionalism of media representatives in the effective monitoring of central and local government activities.

10 journalists will be selected to attend the 10-days study tour in mid-July 2006. The focus of the programme will be on (i) introducing journalists to the good practices of media’s oversight role and function of government programs; and (ii) increasing journalists’ knowledge on monitoring, data analysis and reporting in line with European standards.

Eligibility

Participants should:
 Hold a diploma of higher education (preferably in journalism or related field);
 Be a working journalist from local TV, radio or print/electronic periodical media;
 Have work experience of minimum 2 years in analysing and reporting government activities;
 Have an extensive knowledge of English.


Requirements
Applicants should submit the following documents:
 Application form (can be downloaded from www.britishcouncil.am)
 Supporting essay (up to 500 words) explaining candidate’s motivation to participate in the programme, expectations and future professional plans;
 Professional CV;
 Copy of the diploma(s);
 2-3 samples of own work (for TV programmes, they can be presented in VHS, DVD or VCD formats). The samples of works will be returned after the selection process;
 Recommendation letter from their chief-editors/managers stating the strengths of the applicant as well as the support of the organisation enabling the candidate to participate in the programme for its entire duration.

Applicants should commit to:
 cascade down their new knowledge and skills gained in the UK to their colleagues through delivery of series of trainings;
 participate in further activities of the project (organisation of an international conference, design and publication of journalists’ handbook, etc.); and
 be actively involved in the establishment and maintenance of the professional network of journalists in the region and act as mentors for colleagues joining the network.

The deadline for submitting the application package is 21 June 2006. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
