How to install application through FTP client software
I've tried to keep the "Title" clear enough, I mean I want to install a free SQL named "PostgreSQL", I am not quite sure whether it'd provide me all facilities of SQL or not, one of my friend said there are lesser chances that the host server which I use will recognize it, but I think it should not to do much with that host server because they had given me my "FTP server", now it's over me what I install on that or not, may be there would be certain resource consuming applications which they can restrict, for them I won't be obstinate but I do believe that I can install something over my "FTP server" with my FTP client software named "FileZilla", now if I am right then how should I install this application of "PostgreSQL", I have downloaded its "Linux" package from its website "http://www.postgresql.org/" now what should I do, I downloaded the Linux package because my host server uses :-
OS: Debian Linux
PHP Ver: 5.1.6
MySQL Ver: 5.0.27
Max Execution Time: 15 sec
I have not assigned the privilege of using PHP and MySQL so I want to install "PostgreSQL", after installing this can I install PhpBB3 script? Can anyone assist me for this? Though I never used Linux but if you write anything technical I shall try my best to grasp it and learn it, hope you get me with this. HELP

by ftp you can only upload/download files
you can not execute anything on server, you need access to server's console by ssh/telnet. So if it's just a regular web hosting you can't install software yourself. You need at least VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server) for installing what you want, yourself.
Still, there is a plenty of web hosting services, which give also PosgreSQL prebundled.
But another point is, are you sure you need PostagreSQL? It's more powerful then MySQL, but if you don't really need the power of postgre, mysql will be faster. For standart phpBB MySQL is for sure better option, then PostgreSQL.

Thanks a lot "Xelgen" actually I heard about an application named "e107", in which they give one package and we are to upload it and then run its "install.php" file through any web browser, and it will do up the later work, I was wondering if that kind of method can be deducted? I can't try this because I downloaded files of "PostgreSQL" but they are very big as quanta, means some files are bigger than 6mb, which is the limit as a singleton file, assigned to me by the hosting firm, so can I split those files first and then upload them through FTP and then on that FTP server itself, can rejoin them? I know it's seeming impossible, but if there is some other way out for this, then please inform me, thanks again.

Nope, don't mix it. install.php is just a php script. It's a script which (already installed) php interpretator runs, and it just creates some tables in DB, copies files, in your local web server directory. But you can't run/install binary executable same way, and on absolute majority of hostings, you dont' have enough permissions/access to server, to do it. Even though you can try to find a hosting whish will let you run php's exec() command, you dont' have enough filesystem/OS permissions to install, and configure such system as postgreSQL is.

Alright "Xelgen", you've been very supportive, so now I think I got no way out of this trouble. Thanks friend. The only lesson I learn from this whole mishap is, to always have your own host server and never rely on these lucrative looking providers. If anyone reads it, do keep it in mind

Your welcome, still the question is are you sure you badly need postreSQL?
MySQL will be more then enough for majority of standard web applications + again, on small DB (even, not so small forum as this one, with 7 years history, can be condiered small enough) it will be faster.

Sorry for late response, I had to start from the beginning so it took time, Xelgen actually Postgre was a try of getting some sort of database system which I was not assigned with the web host, I thought they would allow me to install my own if they don't want to provide me SQL, but they didn't so I opted for new host which provide SQL, and I am running MySQL based Web Application succefully there, so now that problem got solved with an entire new building. You can also take a look, it is Nucleusfermi Phasor!
